The only way to know if you are infected with HIV is to be tested. You cannot decide whether you have been infected simply because of the symptoms. It is possible for some people who are infected with HIV to have no symptoms at all for 10 years or more. The "risk matrix" below serves as a rough guide as to the risk of different sex acts with different types of sex partners.

I'm | My partner is | |||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Negative |
Don't know |
Positive |
||||||||||||
Receptive anal sex (Bottoming) | ||||||||||||||
Insertive anal sex (Topping) | ||||||||||||||
Receptive oral sex (Giving a blow job) | ||||||||||||||
Insertive oral sex (Getting a blow job) | ||||||||||||||

The above risk matrix is meant for reference for the risk of transmitting HIV in relative terms of various sex acts. It does not tell the exact risk in the real life for individuals since it also depends on the window period and other factors such as having sex with or without ejaculation, presence of other STIs, viral load of the positive partner and HIV prevalence in the population, etc.
